NiMag
Coal of Africa holds an interest of 100% in the metals processing organisation, the NiMag group. The group comprises mainly three companies engaged principally in the manufacture and distribution of nickel magnesium alloys, ferro-silicon magnesium alloys and metal fibres.
The NiMag companies' roots go back to 1962, when (under a different name) it began manufacturing nickel magnesium master alloys in the small town of Magaliesburg, 75km west of Johannesburg. Since then it went into the production of ferro-silicon magnesium alloys in 1997, while Metalloy Fibres (Pty) Ltd began manufacturing stainless steel reinforcing fibres in 2001.
In 2004 the company structure was changed to encompass NiMag (Pty) Ltd; Magberg Manufacturing (a division of NiMag (Pty) Ltd); Metalloy Fibres (Pty) Ltd; Metalloy Trading (a division of NiMag (Pty) Ltd) and Chromet (Pty) Ltd.
NiMag (Pty) Ltd
Nimag is a world market leader in the manufacture and supply of master alloys of nickel and magnesium, and supplies the global market with an alloy for the specialised foundry industry including aerospace, aeronautical, heavy motor, steel mill roll and associated industries.
Magberg Manufacturing
A specialised producer of ferro-silicon magnesium alloys used to manufacture ductile iron. Capacity is limited and the production is historically split equally between local and export. This is a commodity product and almost all costs are Rand denominated.
Metalloy Fibres (Pty) Ltd
The company is the only cast fibre manufacturer in Africa. In recent years the company has developed both metallic and synthetic fibres for reinforcement usage. The Gautrain rail project has substantially improved the business in terms of volumes and margins.
Metalloy Trading
Metalloy Trading, a division of Metalloy Fibres (Pty) Ltd specialises in the marketing and distribution of non-production group metallurgical products concentrating on specialised materials. It is also well placed to offer logistical and related services both for export and for import.
Chromet (Pty) Ltd
Chromet (Pty) Ltd, is a company which historically produced chrome as an element. Production and sales will recommence for all the Group’s chrome associated products and management anticipate manufacturing chrome in the near future at a new factory site.
